Target: Bird Hunter

Target is a Brittany Spaniel, a hunting breed used to track, point, flush and retrieve game birds, but who is also helping to conserve game bird populations. Target helps his owner Rejean Roy conduct field surveys to assess whether certain species of game birds need protecting. Target’s job is to point and hold any birds he finds, so that Rejean can photograph them and make notes. But he has to endure “hunting interruptus” as he is not allowed to flush and retrieve them. If a search turns up too few birds, hunting in the area is banned so the population can regenerate. We follow Target and Rejean as they survey a provincial woodland in Quebec, Canada.

Target, chien de chasse de race épagneul breton dont le travail consiste à pister, tomber en arrêt, lever et rapporter le gibier à plumes, contribue à préserver les espèces d’oiseaux. En effet, il aide son maître Réjean Roy à recenser sur le terrain les espèces à protéger. Target tombe en arrêt devant les oiseaux, sans bouger, pendant que Réjean les photographie et prend des notes. Ce travail est difficile pour Target, car il n’est pas autorisé à lever et rapporter le gibier. Si le recensement indique qu’il y a pénurie d’oiseaux dans une région, la chasse y est alors interdite pour permettre aux populations de se régénérer. Nous suivons Target et Réjean dans un parc provincial du Québec.
